Communing with Nature during Covid.
When covid hit, I had to stay at home. One of the few interactions allowed, was going outside in nature. As a botanical artist this afforded me the luxury of watching as the plants developed in my garden and drawing them. Since I couldn’t see anyone nor go anywhere, this became a time for me to just observe and draw my garden. When I study and draw from nature, I feel a presence of something that never fails to take my breath away. I “undress” the plant to study the mystery within, exploring plants and flowers on a micro level, almost the way an insect does.
I decided to work on a Kraft paper to allow for a different feeling to develop in my work. A mid tone neutral color allows for contrast of lights and darks and colors but creates a quiet somber feel immediately. I drew plants in my garden, foraged in the woods, and from my son’s farm. I normally work on white paper so this past year I have created an entire year of following nature with this feeling of Kraft Paper. Here are some of my favorites. These are available as Giclee digital fine art prints, use archival inks and acid free paper or canvas. I create these prints and do the printing in my studio.
